When it gets cold outside we are told to close up the house tight to keep the warm air inside. During the winter though, that warm inside air can feel stuffy and unpleasant and according to Harvard Health can even cause increased allergies and discomfort. Dust mites, pet dander and even mold spores can circulate through your home. This can be due to a few factors such as poor ventilation in your home. Pets who are inside more during winter and can emit more dander and unkept vents can be recirculating dust and debris. Here are a few simple things you can do to keep your home feeling fresh this winter.
1. Start Ventilating
Ventilation is simply pushing old air out and bringing fresh new air in. Even opening a door and using your Mirage Retractable Screen for 10 – 15 minutes a day can make a great difference. While you have your door open, be sure to turn on your exhaust fans to help move old air out at the same time.
2. Maintain your Filtration
Ensure your furnace filter is being changed as often as recommended. When the filters are clogged with dust, not only will your furnace not run optimally but it will not help to clean your air. If your air ducts are due for cleaning, be sure to book a professional service and get it checked off of your list.
3. Cook with the Exhaust
Turn on your stove exhaust whenever you start to cook to evacuate any pollutants or gases. This is especially important if you use a gas cooktop.
4. Micro-Ventilate
Often times we can keep a window open just slightly without effecting the room’s temperature too much. Or in rooms that we want to keep on the cool side, such as a bedroom.
5. Increase Pet Grooming
As much as possible, take your pup outside and brush their thick winter coat and dander away.
6. Keep Cleaning
Wipe surfaces and vacuum to remove dust and dander that has settled. With the increased time spent indoors at home this year, working to be mindful of the air quality of your home can make a big difference in the enjoyment of your living space.
